Description
This course prepares students to investigate a post blast scene by reviewing the theory and effects of explosives and by drawing on information and evidence from previously investigated post blast scenes. Students conduct post blast scene evaluations using their respective departmental standard operational plans and the recommended outfitting of an Explosives Disposal Unit command post. The course includes practicing effective search and sift patterns, evidence collection, recording, packaging and storage of evidence. Time is also dedicated to the evaluation of physical evidence at the scene. Together with support agencies (such as public forensic laboratories, and legal experts), students study case evidence and prepare for a simulated court presentation.

Learning outcomes
- Knowledge of the basic theory of explosives
- Understanding the resources and the role resources assume in the investigative process
- Understanding the investigative techniques and procedures used at the post blast scene
- Knowledge of previous post blast investigations
- Understanding the techniques and procedures taught in the course to manage and investigate a post blast scene
- Ability to act as expert witnesses for the Crown, reporting on the post blast analysis
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to forensic identification technicians directly involved with post blast investigations and/or investigators with the authority to investigate post blast scenes on behalf of their accredited agency (e.g., police, fire)
- If you are not involved with post blast investigations, you must have successfully completed the Police Explosives Technicians and Radiography (PETC) or the Police Explosives Technicians Validation Course (PETVC) within the past five years
- It is recommended that applicants complete the Police Explosives Technician – IED Recognition and Reconstruction course prior to registering for this one
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments
- Various evaluation methods are used, including testing practical exercise of post blast scenes and the presentation of evidence
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor
