Description
Police explosives technicians perform render safe procedures using different equipment (e.g. disrupters, robots, bomb suits and protective gear). They also perform their duties using different techniques, including hook and line, searches, and hand dismantling. This course teaches students how and when to use equipment and related techniques in order to deal with explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Format and delivery

This course is presented in person.
Theoretical components are delivered in classroom.
Practical components are conducted at the explosives range.

- Pre-course assignments
A self paced online pre-course training package must be completed.
The package takes about 8 to 10 hours to complete. Participants will have up to three months to complete the package from the date they receive their joining instructions.
Participants must get a minimum mark of 80% on all pre-course assessments in order to attend the onsite portion of the course.
Learning outcomes
- Ability to identify triggering devices and other components of improvised explosive devices
- Ability to interpret x-ray images to identify components of improvised explosive devices
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures when using explosive ranges
- Ability to initiate an explosive charge using the non-electric method, the electric method and shock tube
- Ability to use disrupter weapons on improvised explosive devices
- Ability to use bomb disposal suits and related equipment
- Ability to use and maintain the robot
- Ability to use hook and line techniques to move suspect packages
- Ability to conduct searches of vehicles that may contain an improvised explosive device
- Ability to perform render safe procedures on improvised explosive devices
- Ability to hand dismantle an improvised explosive device during a category A incident
- Understanding how to use forensic laboratories services
- Ability to dispose of explosives
- Ability to recognize and dispose of homemade explosives
- Ability to describe current trends and terrorist activities
- Ability to identify roles and responsibilities as a first responder during a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) threat
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to:
- Police personnel who are required to perform the functions of Police Explosives Technicians (PET)
- Departments considering the establishment of an Explosives Disposal Unit/Explosives Response Unit may be considered
- Others will be considered on an individual basis by the course coordinator. Additional documentation may be required by the participant from their immediate supervisor to justify their need to register for the course
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments
- Various evaluation methods are used, including assessment of case study, peer evaluation, final exam, and range exercise
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor
