Description
This course provides the knowledge, tools and resources to apply Canadian law when investigating Internet-related child sexual exploitation offences. It examines traditional investigative techniques, how to use the Internet as an investigative tool to collect evidence, and how to prepare and execute search warrants, searches for evidence, and suspect interviews. The course focuses on the importance of having standard practices that help and facilitate inter-agency cooperation during investigations. Hands-on practice exercises and scenarios are used throughout the course to apply the knowledge and skills learned.

Learning outcomes
- Understanding the role, responsibilities and services provided by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre.
- Understanding what constitutes a child exploitation related offence.
- Ability to prepare all required documentation in support of an Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) search warrant.
- Understanding how to evaluate images and videos for evidence of child exploitation offences.
- Understanding how to collect evidence using online tools and traditional investigative techniques.
- Understanding how to interview suspected pedophiles.
- Knowledge of best practices when communicating with the media regarding child exploitation investigations.
- Understanding how to prepare to testify in court.
- Understanding how to input case data into appropriate databases.
- Knowledge of advanced ICE investigative techniques.
- Understanding the psychological impacts of working on ICE investigations.
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to police officers currently working full-time on child exploitation investigations or individuals who are authorized to investigate child exploitation crimes.
- Registrants must have successfully completed the Digital Technologies for Investigators Course (DTIC).
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College.
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments.
- Various evaluation methods are used, including preparation of search warrant documentation and a written exam.
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor.
