Description
Critical Incidents are typically unplanned events such as hostage takings, barricaded persons, workplace violence, and other crisis situations. These events significantly impact public safety and require special organizational skills and abilities on the part of emergency response personnel. This course helps prepare senior police officials tasked with the critical incident command of police operations. It provides them with the knowledge, skills and commonly accepted practices and procedures essential to the effective and efficient planning and direction of such operations in crisis situations.

Learning outcomes
- Understanding how to plan, direct and command operations in critical incidents
- Understanding the nature of incidents
- Understanding how to assess the need for resources and order all required resources
- Ability to establish effective command post and command structure
- Demonstrating effective critical incident command decision making
- Ability to identify criminal investigative requirements and authority
- Ability to execute and complete operational plans
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to police supervisors required to assume and retain command of police operations in critical incident situations, including hostage or barricaded situations
- Registrants must have completed the Initial Critical Incident Response (ICIR) course and/or the Immediate Action Rapid Deployment (IARD) course and/or the Critical Incident Manager (CIM) and/or equivalent immediate response course IR 100, IR 200, IR 300 and/or equivalent
- Registrants must be part of an Organization with EFE (Explosives Force Entry) and HRT (Hostage Rescue) capability. Organizations which are not EFE and HRT ready must have a memorandum of understanding with a police service with that capability
- Registrants must have completed the ICS 100 or IMS100 incident command and/or incident management training, and/or equivalent
- Registrants must have recent operational experience
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
- A letter of recommendation
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments
- Various evaluation methods are used, including scenarios
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor
