Description
This course provides the skills, knowledge and investigative techniques essential to successfully investigate and safely dismantle a variety of clandestine laboratories and enhance the professional approach to clandestine drug investigation. Trends with various amphetamines (meth, MDMA), synthetic opioids (fentanyl, W, AH and U compounds) are examined with procedures for their safe handling.

- theoretical portions are offered in classroom; practical exercises take place in a simulated clandestine laboratory and drug syntheses take place in a laboratory
Learning outcomes
- Ability to identify various types of clandestine laboratories and related components
- Ability to apply various investigative techniques associated with the investigation and dismantling of a clandestine laboratory
- Ability to select the appropriate level of personal protective equipment
- Understanding the appropriate safety procedures associated with the investigation and with dismantling a clandestine laboratory
- Knowledge of the investigative, legislative and prosecutorial tools used to investigate, secure and dismantle a clandestine laboratory
- Knowledge of dismantling techniques to properly and safely tear down, collect and preserve evidence from a clandestine laboratory
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to police officers who are or will be assigned to a full time specialized unit mandated to investigate drug offences or involved in the investigation of clandestine laboratories
- Participants must have successfully completed the CPC's Drug Investigative Techniques Course (DITC) or equivalent course, or alternatively, within their application, provide written documentation of relevant training and/or drug experience
- This course includes practical exercises that require physical exertion. Due to stress on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems while using respiratory equipment, registrants must be in good physical condition. Registrants with operational medical restrictions (e.g. asthma, blood pressure) will not be accepted
- The course requires that all students are fit for face masks and so male students must be clean shaven, including no goatees
- It is highly recommended that registrants familiarize themselves with their police services' policy on clandestine laboratories, Schedule VI of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and the Precursor Control Regulations
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments, written and practical
- Various evaluation methods are used, including: oral exam on respiratory protection equipment, tactical/field exercises, proper use of personal protective equipment, and a final written examination
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor
