Description
Members of forensic identification teams require highly specialized formal training before they are able to attend crime scenes and give evidence before the courts. This course provides the knowledge and skills in the areas of fingerprinting, physical comparisons, forensic photography, digital imaging, and crime scene techniques. It also examines the recognition, collection, examination, preservation and presentation of evidence.
Please note that the following computer software will be used during the course and it would be advantageous for you to be familiar with them: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, CSIpix Comparator, Scene PD, Corel Video Studio, Adobe Acrobat and the Windows environment (Word, Excel, etc).

- theoretical components are delivered in classroom; practical components may take place indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Learning outcomes
- Ability to identify fingerprints and use scientific principles to defend their identification.
- Ability to digitally process images.
- Ability to prepare evidence charts using image enhancement software.
- Understanding how to photograph a scene using forensic photography techniques.
- Understanding how to use chemicals and/or powders to develop and/or enhance fingerprints on a variety of surfaces.
- Ability to locate, recover, and preserve two and three-dimensional impression evidence.
- Understanding the value of a bloodstain pattern as evidence.
- Understanding how to approach and process different crime scenes.
- Understanding how to record a scene through video or plan drawings.
- Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the forensic identification specialist within the Major Case Management model and the roles and responsibilities of the different units of the lab.
- Understanding how to prepare to provide opinion evidence.
- Understanding how to explore various sciences and their applicability to forensic identification.
Eligibility and mandatory requirements
- This course is offered to individuals who are or who are about to become full time forensic identification specialists with law enforcement agencies that have functional identification services or will be establishing functional identification services during the current fiscal year.
- Acceptance or refusal in the course is at the discretion of the Canadian Police College.
Assessment
- Success in the course is based on participation and completion of all required assignments.
- Various evaluation methods are used, including:
- Pre-course exam
- Ridgeology written exam
- Photography written exam
- Crime scene written exam
- Friction ridge analysis report
- Practical exam
- Fingerprint comparison exercise
- Fingerprint comparison exam
- Re-testing or re-evaluation is conducted at the discretion of the course instructor.
Transfer credits
The graduates of the college's Forensic Identification Training Program are eligible for credits toward specific graduate programs at Laurentian University and at Wilfrid Laurier University. For more information, please refer to the Transfer credits section.
