CPC welcomes Indigenous youth for career day
Last week, in partnership with RCMP National and C Division's Indigenous relations, the Canadian Police College in Ottawa welcomed 41 Indigenous youth from Kitigan Zibi and from Darcy McGee High School. This event was held in the spirit of fostering relationships between Indigenous communities and the RCMP. For this occasion, 8 indigenous members representing various units were present to meet the visitors and share their experience.
The day began with a smudging ceremony and a prayer by an Indigenous Elder, followed by a visit of the RCMP Musical Ride stables where youth learned how members are trained to become riders and to care and train the horses.
After lunch, the youth had the rare opportunity to observe live demonstrations from the Explosives Training Unit, Forensic Identification and Clandestine Lab, where they learned first-hand how police approach a crime scene with the cutting-edge investigative tools and technology they have at their disposal.
The event concluded with a fair, where participants could ask questions to the various units present. Students also had the pleasure of trying the drone used by the Emergency Response Team, doing the PARE test (the physical training test required to be an RCMP officer), sit in an armored vehicle from Protective Services and meeting with specialized officers from various units.
The youth were also given a presentation about the Indigenous Pre-Cadet Training, a program that is tailored specifically to Indigenous youth who wish to experience what the training to become a police officer would be like.
