Naming the CPC Auditorium Màwandòsewin: a gathering place

Monique Manatch, Knowledge Keeper with S/Sgt. Jeff Poulette, MC for the event

The Canadian Police College is located on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.

We have been providing advanced and specialized training and executive development to law enforcement officers from all jurisdictions to help them combat crime and increase Canadians' safety, since 1976.

As part of the CPC's reconciliation efforts, we have taken steps to raise the awareness of Indigenous cultures to those visiting our campus. We are proud to have the privilege to share items related to Indigenous cultures on our campus, such as a Métis Red River Cart and a western style First Nation Teepee, which help to highlight the richness and the teachings that the Indigenous communities brings to our country's fabric.

As part of our reconciliation journey, the CPC held a ceremony on September 15, 2023 to provide our auditorium with an Algonquin name recognizing that reconciliation is a journey, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the CPC approached Algonquin Knowledge Keeper Monique Manatch, from Mitchikanibikok Inik, for assistance in naming our auditorium with an Algonquin name. Monique met with Algonquin Elder, Kokom Shirley Odjick Tolley, from Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg, who accepted our request.

Considering the place and the people, the Elder reflected and offered the Algonquin name "Màwandòsewin", meaning a gathering place or a place to gather.

The CPC community accepted this gift as it honours the land, its people and the spirit of this auditorium.
